  • Because they are mammals, Dolphin Calves are born live after a twelve-month gestation. Newborns weigh about 40 pounds, and they remain with their mothers for 18 months after birth. Playfulness is a notable characteristic even for the young.

  • Scientific Name: Tursiops truncates

  • Characteristics: With its lifelike eyes and playful, twisting body, this Dolphin Calf looks ready to glide through the water. Realism is evident in the attention to detail, such as its anterior dorsal fin and a curved nose.

Along with whales, sea lions, and a few others, Dolphins are mammals that inhabit the sea, meaning they breathe air and give birth to live young and feed them milk, all while living in the ocean. This is one of the reasons scientists are so sure Dolphins and other marine mammals have a terrestrial ancestor. Additional evidence, in the form of rod-shaped pelvic bones, suggests that dolphin ancestors had hind legs. Finally, DNA mapping has revealed the dolphins are closely related to pigs, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering the closest living relative of a whale is probably a hippopotamus.
