    History

Along with whales, sea lions, and a few others, Dolphins are mammals that inhabit the sea, meaning they breathe air and give birth to live young and feed them milk, all while living in the ocean. This is one of the reasons scientists are so sure Dolphins and other marine mammals have a terrestrial ancestor. Additional evidence, in the form of rod-shaped pelvic bones, suggests that dolphin ancestors had hind legs. Finally, DNA mapping has revealed the dolphins are closely related to pigs, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering the closest living relative of a whale is probably a hippopotamus.
