  • History:

Currently classified as least concern by the IUCN, the bald eagle is thought to be the most populated of the eight species of sea eagle. However, this was not always the case. In the mid-20th century, the bald eagle population dropped from 500,000 nesting pairs to as low as 400 due to a multitude of reasons, the most prevalent being pesticides. However, extensive restoration efforts allowed the bald eagle to be declassified as an endangered species in 1995, and once again declassified as a threatened species in 2007.
